Australian mezzo-soprano Kate Howden studied at Trinity Laban, the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio.
Recent opera roles include Mama and Tzippie/Where the Wild Things Are (Mariinsky Concert Hall), Baba the Turk/Rake’s Progress (Gothenburg Symphony) and title role/Cendrillon. Soloist performances include Turnage’s monodrama Twice Through the Heart and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella at the Ojai Festival and the Aldeburgh Festival, the complete mélodies of Duparc at the Machynlleth Festival with Sachika Taniyama and the Canberra International Music Festival, where repertoire included Satie’s Socrate and extracts from Monteverdi’s Ulisse. Kate worked with Australian contemporary circus group Circa on their worldwide tour of Il Ritorno, with venues including the Barbican Theatre London, Zellerbach Hall Berkeley and Canadian Stage Toronto. In January 2021 Stephen’s Dodgson’s opera Margaret Catchpole was released on Naxos, in which Kate sings the eponymous role.
Covid soloist cancellations included Mozart’s Requiem with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Barbara Hannigan and Ligeti’s Requiem with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
